Each year at Freshman Orientation, the incoming class of Sam Houston State University has the opportunity to participate in a service project to help the SHSU orientation1community of Huntsville. The students and their families, along with the SHSU Orientation Team, had the opportunity this year to take part in a Penny War, which collected money for a local charity selected by a vote of the students and their families.

This year, the incoming Class of 2017 voted to donate their collections, a total $1,303.80, to the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County!

The service project not only helps to unite the incoming class, but also to connect students and their families to the community of Huntsville right from the start. They quickly come to understand that the University motto, “The Measure of a Life is its Service” is more than just words – it is a way of life for the Bearkat Nation.

SHSU orientation2Thank you, Class of 2017, Courtney, and Jesse Bernal, M.Ed., Director of New Student Orientation!
